Chapter Five

Marley was taken aback by Nat’s offer. “Dinner? With you? Like, right now?”

“Or sometime later, if you’re up for it,” Nat said, her confidence faltering. She tried to keep playing it cool, reminding herself that Desiree and Kaitlyn were watching, and they would most likely swoop in and rescue her if need be.

“Um… gosh, I’m not sure Monica would want us to leave this early…”

“It’s totally full in here,” Nat said. “There’s no way she would miss us. I mean, you can always just say no, if you don’t want to go out with me.”

“N-no! I mean, that’s definitely not what I’m trying to do here. If you think it would be okay with Monica, then let’s go,” Marley said, sounding more enthusiastic about the whole thing. Nat realized she’d probably caught Marley way off guard, but that thought was quickly replaced by one of self-congratulation. Desiree and Kaitlyn had said Marley was playing hard to get, but Nat had scored a date with her right away.

Remembering Kaitlyn and Desiree were supposed to be watching her, Nat turned from Marley to give them a silent status update, but she found no sign of them anywhere.

“Are you looking for someone?” Marley asked, seeing the way Nat’s eyes roamed around the pub.

“No, just making sure I’m not abandoning all two friends I have here,” Nat joked.

“Shoot, I should actually go make sure Jackie and Kaya know where I’m going,” Marley realized. “I’ll go grab my bag and meet you outside, okay?”

“Sounds good,” Nat agreed. As soon as Marley left, Nat quickly snaked her way around the room, trying to find Kaitlyn and Desiree. She found them by following the sound of Desiree’s laugh, and discovered her friend lying on the bar with Kaitlyn doing body shots off of her neck, much to the enjoyment of the crowd surrounding them.

“Guys!” Nat called above the cheers as Kaitlyn completed what must have been at least her second round. Desiree saw Nat and hopped off the bar, giving a sheepish grin.

“Sorry. We got distracted,” she said.

“I can see that!” Nat responded, her eyebrows almost up to her hairline. Kaitlyn steadied herself on a bar stool and hiccupped before joining the conversation.

“Marley said yes to getting dinner with me,” Nat said in a hurry, as though Marley might change her mind if she took too long.

“No way! That’s great,” Desiree said dutifully. She looked over at Kaitlyn to make sure her friend was okay.

“Get it,” was all Kaitlyn could say.

“How many shots did she do?” Nat asked Desiree.

“Four, possibly five when I wasn’t looking,” Desiree answered. “She’ll be fine. Go have fun with Marley. Here, I’ll turn the volume on my phone up so you can call me if you need anything.”

“Des, you’re the best,” Nat said, hoping Desiree could hear how grateful she was. “I’m gonna go outside to meet Marley.”

“Good luck!” Desiree called after Nat, reminiscent of what Kaitlyn had said before Nat got Marley to agree to a date. She could only hope this round went just as well.
